Namibia Employer's Guide

Namibia, a Southern African gem renowned for its vast deserts and abundant wildlife, is also a growing economic hub. With a stable political climate and a focus on economic diversification, Namibia presents opportunities for businesses looking to expand their operations. However, understanding the local labour market is crucial for success.

Namibia operates a progressive income tax system with rates ranging from 18% to 30%. Additionally, employers are responsible for contributing to the Social Security Fund (SSF). Value Added Tax (VAT) stands at 15%. It is essential to consult with a local tax professional to ensure compliance with Namibia's tax regulations.

Currently, minimum wages exist in the security, agriculture, construction, and domestic sectors. A new National Minimum Wage set at 18 Namibia dollars per hour will very likely be phased in from 2025 with a scheduled review after two years.

Namibia's Labour Act mandates a standard workweek of 45 hours, typically distributed over five days. Overtime is permissible but capped at 10 hours per week and 3 hours per day. Overtime pay is calculated at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate.

While Namibia doesn't have a comprehensive mandatory benefits package, employers often provide additional perks to attract and retain talent. Common benefits include paid annual leave (at least 20 days), sick leave, maternity leave, and pension contributions. Some companies also offer healthcare insurance, housing allowances, and transportation subsidies.

Namibia's labour laws entitle employees to several types of leave.

Annual leave
A minimum of 20 working days per year.

Sick leave
Accrues over time, with specific conditions applying.

Maternity leave
Paid maternity leave is available for a specified period.

Paternity leave
Short periods of unpaid paternity leave are typically granted.

Public holidays
Namibia observes several public holidays throughout the year.

Namibia boasts a relatively young and educated workforce. There can be fierce competition for skilled talent and effective recruitment strategies are beneficial.

Competitive compensation packages
Offering salaries and benefits above industry standards.

Professional development opportunities
Investing in employee training and growth.

Strong employer branding
Building a positive company culture and reputation.

Leveraging local networks
Partnering with educational institutions and industry associations.

Termination of employment in Namibia can occur for various reasons, including redundancy, misconduct, or contract expiration. Employers must adhere to specific notice periods and severance pay requirements as outlined in the Labour Act. Consulting with legal counsel is advisable to ensure compliance with termination procedures.

Employers in Mozambique have access to a range of long-term and temporary options for ensuring compliant employments in-country. These include but are not limited to agency, in-country partner, PEO, and EOR arrangements.
